Cardiopulmonary

Cardiopulmonary Services
The Cardiopulmonary Department adheres to guidelines for comprehensive exercise and education programs set forth by the American Heart Association, American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Medicine, the American College of Sports Medicine and Medicare.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation & Respiratory Therapy
The Rehab program was started in 1993. Patients are seen in pulmonary rehabilitation on Monday afternoons, Tuesday and Thursday 7AM to 6PM. Patients with chronic respiratory problems are monitored for pulse rate, respiratory rate and oxygen saturation.

Pulmonary and respiratory professionals use diagnostic testing, therapeutics, monitoring and pulmonary rehabilitation to meet patient needs.

Patients learn about medications, breathing exercises and how to conserve their energy while doing the everyday tasks we all take for granted. While in the program, patients learn exercises that help them restore the highest possible functional capacity.

The department also offers respiratory care services 24 hours a day to inpatients, outpatients and extended care patients of all ages.

Whether a pneumonia patient in the hospital, a Care Center resident with emphysema or an out-patient seeking help with asthma, the cardiopulmonary team is equipped with the professional expertise to help.

Cardiac Rehabilitation
The continuum of care for heart attack and stroke patients may begin with an emergency visit to the Chest Pain Center. For many, following angioplasty or other procedures, a disciplined and supervised exercise program helps to regain cardiac capability.

Many patients graduate to wellness programs after progressing through rehabilitation.

The out-patient Cardiac Rehabilitation Center is available on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6AM to 3PM, offering a progressive exercise program, written and conducted with physician supervision.

Blood pressures are monitored pre and post exercise and as needed, based on individual cases. Oxygen saturation monitoring is also available. Equipment includes treadmills, stationary bikes, rowing machines, recumbent stepper, free weights and supportive weight equipment.
Cardiac education includes information on the disease process, principles of exercise, risk factors, anatomy and physiology of the heart, stress reduction, dietary counseling and medications.

Patients are monitored through radial telemetry, with a central monitoring station displaying the patient's ECG waveforms and uses programmable alarms to indicate the presence of arrhythmia. Should emergencies arise, the rehabilitation program has a direct alarm to the emergency room and staff are certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
